Seafarers that hold an existing CoST, and meet the mandatory onboard training and experience are required to demonstrate continued competency under the STCW convention.
The Certificate of Safety Training Continued Competence is made up of the following elements:
As per the 2010 Manila amendments to the International Convention on the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers 1978, as amended (STCW Convention), seafarers are required to demonstrate continued competence in sea survival and fire fighting to maintain the validity of their certificate.
This can be achieved by a combination of onboard training and experience (participation in onboard mandatory fire and abandon ship drills), and practical training at an AMSA approved training provider.
This qualifying sea service must have occurred in the preceding five years, and revalidation must occur before 31st December 2016.
