AMSA Approved Certificate of Proficiency Continued Competence

ERGT Australia’s Certificate of Proficiency Continued Competence (CoP CC) course combines the three short course requirements for Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques and survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats.

This continued competence course applies to Ratings (Integrated Rating, Able Seaman, Deck Rating and Engine Room Rating) that have qualifying sea service in the preceding 5 years.

Learning Outcomes

The course outcomes include the training outcomes required by AMSA for the provision of a Certificate of Safety Training. These include:

The STCW standard for personal survival techniques:

  • Survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment

The STCW standard for fire prevention and firefighting:

  • Minimise the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire
  • Fight and extinguish fires

The STCW Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats:

  • Operate off-load and on-load release devices for survival craft
  • Proper resetting of both off-load and on-load
  • Release devices for survival craft.
  • Use signalling equipment, including pyrotechnics

Training Standard Pre-requisites

There are no training standard pre-requisites required to be collected by ERGT Australia.
To revalidate your competency with AMSA you will be required to meet all the requirements as outlined on the AMSA website.

Structure and Assessment
This course is delivered through classroom presentations, participant discussion as well as practical components within a simulated workplace environment. Competence is assessed through written and practical assessment.

Medical and Health Standards
A medical certificate is not required for this course, however a health questionnaire and declaration of fitness will be required at course registration. Please contact ERGT for any concerns regarding completion of practical training and assessment requirements and to discuss options for reasonable adjustments.

Additional Requirements
A Government issued photo identification is required for course registration.

Please read AS/NZS 1715 Appendix B: Facial Seal of Respirators. You will not be able to meet competency if you do not comply with the requirements of the standard. Please contact ERGT if you require further clarification.

Revalidation
As per the 2010 Manila amendments to the International Convention on the Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for seafarers 1978, as amended (STCW Convention), seafarers are required to demonstrate continued competence in sea survival and fire fighting to maintain the validity of their certificate.

AMSA endorsed training is regulated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), which is Australia’s national agency responsible for maritime safety.

Certifications

On successful completion of the course, trainees will be issued with a certificate in accordance with AMSA requirements, for the following elements:
Sea Survival and Fire Fighting Continued Competence for holders of Certificates of Competency (Master, Deck and Engineer Officers) and Certificate of Proficiency as Chief Integrated Rating.
Including relevant competencies from:
Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Code A-VI/1-1)
Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW Code A-VI/1-2)
Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft (STCW Code A-VI/2-1)
These Records of Achievement can be provided to AMSA to revalidate the Certificate of Competence endorsement, via Seafarer form AMSA419.
